NEW BLOG!

Now that we've left Egypt, I feel a need to record what we did there so when we look back on our time we'll remember it wasn't all homeschool and sleeping. I'll continue to post to this blog until I catch up to the time we left Cairo in June 2010. Our new blog will pick up from that time forward.

Whoa! Censored!

First I must explain the title of this post. Sometimes after the younger kids have had their baths they've been known to run around without any clothes on til we find the underwear, pajamas, etc. When they do this the older kids yell, "Whoa! Censored!"

Stay with me--I'll come back to this.

Todd has been working hard since we arrived back to Jordan. His contract is with Zain. He's supposed to only be there 50% of the time and the other 50% is supposed to be as the managing director of Skopos. He's been 100% at Zain until last Saturday when another consultant arrived here from Cairo. She will be the other 50% for Zain and this will hopefully free Todd up to do the managing director responsibilities.

Her name is Shahkrazad. I'm 99.9% sure I've misspelled that but when Todd reads this post he can go in and edit. Anyway, she arrived Saturday. She's never been to Jordan. She'd only been in Cairo with Skopos for about 4 months. Before that she was in the U.S. and Iran. It had been arranged that she would stay at "the apartment" as it has come to be known. Nobody really knows if Zain or Skopos leases it because employees from both companies use it as they come to town for business meetings. It's the same apartment our family stayed in when we came and looked for a place to live and again when we came to Jordan to move and our villa wasn't ready for us to move into. It's the apartment where we ran out of water and the boab (the building super, manager, whatever you want to call him) took pity on us and filled our water tank even though it wasn't the refill day.

As far as we knew Todd was the last one to be in the apartment. He left the apartment when he came to the States in July. Since then he's been getting phone calls asking him where he put the key to the apartment. It was the only key and they couldn't get into the apartment without it. Of course Todd had lost the key. He couldn't remember where he put it. Todd couldn't believe that was the only key but whatever. He looked and looked and finally told the owner that they'd have to change the locks because he couldn't find the key. A couple of days later Todd did find the key. He quickly texted the owner and told him not to change the locks as the key had been found. Todd never did get a response as to whether or not the locks did get changed.

Back to Shahkrazad. We picked her up from the airport and took her to stay at the apartment. We weren't sure if the key would even work as we didn't know if the locks had been changed yet and Todd had the only key to the previous locks. Or so he'd been told.

We arrived at the apartment and Shahkrazad couldn't get the key to work. Todd said it is a tricky key so he took a turn. He had the touch and he was able to unlock the door. He opened it up and there was a man standing there and Whoa! Censored! Yea, that's right.

Of course Todd quickly shut the door again and the three of us stood there stunned. None of us looked long enough at him to know if we recognized him as a Zain or Skopos employee. Todd got on his phone to try to reach the apartment coordinator as he was supposed to know Sahkrazad was coming to use it. While Todd was trying to reach someone and we were trying to get over the shock of what just happened, the boab came up the stairs. Todd asked him if he knew who was in the apt. Todd didn't go into specifics, just that someone was in the apartment and as far as Todd knew, nobody should be there. The boab unlocked an apartment across the hall and told us to wait in that apartment while he went in to get the guy out.

About 10 minutes later the boab came back and said we could now go in. Weird. So we went in and the apartment was dirty and there was food in the fridge. It wasn't absolutely horrendous but Todd had totally cleaned it top to bottom before he left and he had been told nobody had used the apartment since him because he had the only key. We asked the boab who it was in the apartment and the boab obviously didn't know what had happened because he claimed the guy was there to fix the air conditioning. Must've been awfully hot in there.

Over the last few days as people have been contacted and things have been coordinated, it seems everyone still thought Todd had the only key. There was another key previously but it had been lost several months before. We all think the boab has a key but the boab isn't fessing up to that. He claims so many different people are in and out he doesn't know who gives them permission to be there. Basically we think the boab has been letting people stay there. He may not have a job there much longer.
