NEW BLOG!

Now that we've left Egypt, I feel a need to record what we did there so when we look back on our time we'll remember it wasn't all homeschool and sleeping. I'll continue to post to this blog until I catch up to the time we left Cairo in June 2010. Our new blog will pick up from that time forward.

Back again--but you probably didn't know we were gone

I was just noticing on our layout that the "T" of "Todd" is blocked out by the color scheme so it reads "ODD CUMMINGS FAMILY" which may be a better description of us anyway.

We're back online! Yeah! We have been without internet/phone service since Wednesday morning. I woke up Wednesday morning to get the kids off to school and I turned on the computer so I could watch the election results. Our Wednesday morning is the States' Tuesday night. I was expecting to be checking in throughout the day but when I got online at 6:30 am it was already over. WHAT? Where's the drama? Where's the lawsuits? Where's the hanging chads?

Todd was out of town so I had to take the kids to school that day. When I got back I wanted to read all the analysis. Before I left the Prop 8 outcome still wasn't known. But when I returned our internet was down and it's been down ever since--til today. The initial shock of the outcome (it being such a landslide) has passed for me so I'm spending the afternoon today catching up on blogs and such. Far more interesting than any analysis anyway.

Here in Jordan they have police stationed alongside the road and they stop cars randomly. I always carry my passport with me because supposedly when they see an American passport they will quickly let you get on your way. Today was the 2nd time I've been stopped. The first time was uneventful, as was today. But I did get a bit more today as he said to me "American?" I said "yes." He said "Obama good?" What a loaded question! As many of you know, foreigners love Obama as he seems to be all about keeping their best interests in mind. As he says this I'm thinking hmmm. Black President--good. Racism against whites--bad. Freedom to choose a president--good. Socialism--bad. Charity--good. Government deciding who to give the money to--bad. War--bad. Terrorism--worse. My response to him was "We'll see what the next 4 years brings." And so we will. I'm looking forward to it, frankly. I mean really, if he's successful than that will be great. If he's not, then we get to choose someone else to try something different. America is the greatest country on earth.

Todd was in Kenya on Wednesday. A national holiday was declared there. Todd and his coworkers happened to be out in public watching the results and Obama's speech. Todd said it was incredible to be an American there and have people congratulating him, wishing him well, and reminding him how lucky he is to be an American and have these elections. Living here we are reminded many times how fortunate we are to be Americans.
