NEW BLOG!

Now that we've left Egypt, I feel a need to record what we did there so when we look back on our time we'll remember it wasn't all homeschool and sleeping. I'll continue to post to this blog until I catch up to the time we left Cairo in June 2010. Our new blog will pick up from that time forward.

Questionable Parenting

Today is Friday. Todd and Critter left this afternoon for a Scout Overnighter. It is Critter's first. He was nervous because he actually might have to talk to the other boys in Scouting but was glad his dad was able to make the trip with him.

The questionable parenting comes about because it is a Friday--our Sabbath. This scout troop is made up of mostly Americans. There are 2 brothers in the troop that are also in our branch and they chose not to go on the overnighter. We debated whether or not this was appropriate for the Sabbath. Maybe not. The problem arises that because of Sabbath being on a Friday and school being Sunday through Thursday there is really no good day to have an overnighter. Then throw in the fact that several of the boys in the troop attend a Catholic private school. They attend school Saturday, Monday through Thursday and have Sunday as their Sabbath day. So if they catered to us we'd have to do it Thursday to Friday which would still effect our Sabbath or Saturday to Sunday which would effect our school day and some other boys' Sabbath.

Hmmmm. What to do? So we decided he could go. The funny thing is is that we had to convince him to go. He wasn't really sure he wanted to go (see above/talking to others comment).

Then throw in the fact that the kids are just ending a term at school. The school they attend is pro-testing so this next week is finals for grades 4-12. Their first final is Saturday morning--tomorrow morning. I know, I know. Weird that they would schedule it on a Saturday but that's the way they do it here. So Critter will be missing a final exam to go on a scout overnighter. So now we as parents are sending the signal that school isn't all that important.

We're going to parent purgatory, I just know it.

Catherine Cummings, If YOU are going to Parent Purgatory, where in the heck am I going to end up?!!
I always tell Tracy, "Catherine is the brains of that outfit! (sorry Todd!)There is nothing that woman can not do and do well!" And I mean it.

You hang in there....only 60 or so years to go...
Love and a hug,
Sandy
