NEW BLOG!

Now that we've left Egypt, I feel a need to record what we did there so when we look back on our time we'll remember it wasn't all homeschool and sleeping. I'll continue to post to this blog until I catch up to the time we left Cairo in June 2010. Our new blog will pick up from that time forward.

A few homeschool pictures

Here are a few things we've been doing lately. I realize they are all pictures of them doing science projects. I guess the other subjects aren't necessarily picture-worthy as it usually means the kids are just sitting there reading or doing a worksheet. I guess I could've taken some art or music pics. Maybe next time.

Here's Nic helping Red with one of his science labs. Red was learning to measure liquids in a graduated cylinder. The liquid they're using is colored water. Since their science kits came with the safety goggles they both insisted on using them for this dangerous science lab.

Cricket is scooping dirt into a container along with vegetable peels, paper, etc. to determine the rate of decomposition of different items. A few of their projects use "soil." Unfortunately this curriculum wasn't necessarily written for students in Egypt because it isn't just like we can go into our yard and get soil. Sand is no problem. Soil is a problem.

The older kid like to help the younger ones with some of their lessons. Here is Critter helping Nic learn about her sense of touch by feeling objects hidden under a blanket and trying to identify them.

This was taken the first day of homeschool. Batman had a science project and all the kids wanted to see it and participate. The novelty is wearing off a bit and they don't all gather around for each other's lessons as much anymore.

WHEW! You must be exhausted! I can't imagine trying to prep for that many subjects for that many age groups. Keeping track of all of that makes me tired.

Hey here is a great website that your older kids could use. It is about the American Judicial System- specifically Trial by a Jury. The handouts are good and provide for good discussion and the game/simulation is pretty realistic.

Clara, Calvin and Conrad could challenge each other or Todd to a trial.

That looks so fun! Seriously, how much prep time is it for you? I wonder if I could just order the science stuff, it seems awesome.

Thanks for the link, Juleen. I'll make sure we take a look at it.

As far as prep time--it is seriously like 20-30 minutes to get stuff ready for Nic and Red. I go to the k12 website and see what the lessons are for the day. I click on a little button that says "materials needed" and it lists out all the things we'll need for each lesson. The older 4 are on their own to gather their own materials.

Then we all go online and it leads through each lesson (math, language arts, history, science, music, art, phonics, etc.) step by step. If I were a really great teacher I'd read ahead and prepare myself but so far they aren't learning concepts that are too difficult for me to explain on the fly.

The older 4 come to me when they don't understand something and we'll go over that together but otherwise they take assessments and do things on their own.

Yes you can order subject by subject, Erinn but of course the price per course lowers the more courses you enroll in.

Ya know what, I'm just gonna have to do a post on this homeschool thing to explain everything so be looking for that.
