NEW BLOG!

Now that we've left Egypt, I feel a need to record what we did there so when we look back on our time we'll remember it wasn't all homeschool and sleeping. I'll continue to post to this blog until I catch up to the time we left Cairo in June 2010. Our new blog will pick up from that time forward.

Road Trip Part 1

So we found ourselves last Saturday with nothing pressing to do. So we thought "Why not?" So here is the Kuwait/Iraq border. We weren't actually allowed to cross it. As we approached the security gates you see in the picture, we were quickly stopped by some friendly security guards. One of the first questions Todd asked them was "Is this the border?" As you can see there are no "WELCOME TO IRAQ--THE OASIS OF THE MIDDLE EAST" signs. It's pretty much a road that goes through the desert and comes to this point.

It took about 75 minutes to get to the border from our house. There were a couple of these signs posted along the route. It's the same route the Iraq army took when they retreated back into Iraq after they'd invaded Kuwait and then were defeated by American troops.

These are two pictures of semis waiting to go through the security checkpoint. We estimated there were at least 250 semis waiting. They were loaded with really everything you could think of from soda to furniture to building supplies. Many of the drivers had set up camp next to their trucks. We have no idea how long they have to wait to get through. Hopefully not for long though. The temperatures in Kuwait City are consistently around 100 degrees now and it was even hotter out there in the middle of the desert.
