On Tuesday at about 3 pm the electricity went out. Our landlord's nephew (Firas) lives just down the hill so he called to let us know it was out in the area. Come to find out a bulldozer had knocked over a power pole.
I had planned on taking the kids to a park that afternoon for a playgroup of sorts. So we left for the park at about 3:45. We left the park at about 5:30 and stopped by Todd's work to pick him up. By now it was dark. Critter and Todd had to be to Scouts at 6. As we approached our house we realized that the electricity was still out because what is usually a hillside of lights was totally black.
We got McDonalds for dinner (what a lifesaver that place is!). We all went to drop them off at Scouts as nobody wanted to be home in the dark house. Then I brought the rest of the kids back to the house. We had a few candles and a flashlight but Firas brought us more candles. We hunkered down in the kitchen, mostly. We read books and just passed the time til it was time to pick them up from Scouts. I couldn't just send them to bed because it was too early. Of course everyone wanted to ride along to go pick them up from Scouts. When we got back we all just went to bed. Nothing more we could really do. The electricity came back on at about 11:30 that night.
Then on Thursday at about 12:30 the electricity went out again. This time I was right in the middle of baking for a church potluck. My rolls were in the middle of rising. Grrrr. Fortunately I had already finished the Chili-cornbread salad (it was a hit, Pep. thanks!) This time the electricity came back on at about 8:30 p.m. The problem this time was the construction crew was digging and cut some power lines. Critter had some friends over and their plan was to have a little Wii tournament. Fortunately his friends all brought their DS Lites so they ended up eating pizza and playing DS in the dark for like 3 hours. Oh well. It's an excuse to have another party since they didn't get to play the Wii as planned.
We're hoping for continuous light this week.

I gotta tell ya, some of my favorite memories are when the power has been out: we light candles and sometimes eat a candlelight dinner (ie sandwiches or something equally easy) and just hang out as a family. It's great because there is nothing else to get in the way (TV). It makes for a very different evening than usual, especially if all of us are home together.
